Help! I want to change my blog address!

Dear New Bloggers,

I had a few questions from those of you who attended Wednesday morning’s training session on the name of your blog and how you could change it. Image

  • WordPress allows you to very quickly and easily change the title of your blog (ours is 23 Things RHUL) by going to the General Settings and typing something new under Site Title. Click Save Changes and that’s it.
  • If you want to change the web address of your blog (ours is https://23thingsrhul.wordpress.com/), WordPress provide instructions on how to do this. They’re really good, step-by-step, with screenshots and even a video. But if you’ve any questions, just ask one of the RHUL23 team.

For example: Kim’s embarrassing old library blog is titled Nouveau Librarian, but its web address  is http://colesklibrarian.wordpress.com/ (probably because nouveaulibrarian.wordpress.com was taken!)

Using the instructions above this title could be changed to Kim Does 23 Things RHUL and the web address to kimdoes23things.wordpress.com. In fact, I might go away and do this to make it easier to locate…

Happy blogging!

Week 1: Blogs and Blogging

What is a blog?

blog Pronunciation: /blɒɡ/

Definition of blog noun

a personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites, etc. on a regular basis.

verb (blogs, blogging, blogged)

to add new material to or regularly update a blog

Derivatives: blogger noun

(from Oxford Dictionaries, http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/blog?q=blog, accessed on 12/12/12)

Blogging is the act of writing or keeping a blog – a modern day diary or journal which allows you to communicate your thoughts to the wider world. Blogs are used by a wide range of individuals and organisations to communicate with users, members and friends. They can be used to promote services, reflect on events, build up networks and to communicate ideas.

Blogging and 23 Things

Blogging is central to 23 Things RHUL as we use this blog to release each week’s Things, and it’s also how we keep track of your progress via the blogs you set up as part of the programme.  Participants in 23 Things RHUL will need to create and update their own blog, unless they have a blog up and running already which they can use to qualify for prizes. Visit Thing 1 (Part 1): Creating a Blog to follow step by step instructions on how to create a Blog.

Thing 1 (Part 1): Creating a Blog

For the purposes of 23 Things RHUL, we are all going to create WordPress blogs. WordPress is a clean, simple system and you can set your own blog up by following the instructions below. Good luck!

Creating a Blog in WordPress

1. Go to http://www.wordpress.com/ and click on the orange ‘Get Started’ button on the right hand side of the page.

3. To personalise your blog, you might want to pick a new theme (a template, which shapes how your blog will look). To do this, click on ‘Change your blog’s theme’…

Thing 1 (Part 2): Publishing a Blog Post

Now that you’ve created your own blog, the next step is to start adding content. Blogs are made up of individual articles, normally described as ‘posts’ (in fact, you’re reading one right now!). In a blog post you can add text, images, videos, and various other pieces of multimedia.  But for now, let’s keep it simple. The instructions below will show you how to publish a basic blog post:

Publishing a Blog Post in WordPress

1. To create a new post, click on the ‘Posts’ button in the left-hand menubar, and then click on ‘Add New’ from the menu that appears below it.

2. Every blog post needs a title. This is the headline that will indicate what the post is about (in the case of the post you’re reading right now, I’ve gone with the functional, if not a little boring, ‘Thing 1 (Part 2): Publishing a Blog Post’).

Type your title directly into the post title box. For the purposes of your 23 things blog, it might be useful to indicate which ‘thing’ your post relates to in the title, e.g. ‘Thing 1: Blogging’

3. To write the content of the post, simply click into the editor. This works in a very similar way to Microsoft Word: You can type directly into the editor and the bar along the top gives you options for formatting the text (Bold, Italic, etc.)

4. When you’ve finished writing your post, you might like to add tags. These help readers to identify the main topics of the blog post quickly, and also group blog posts together. For example, if you wrote a blog post about baking cupcakes, you might like to tag it with the words ‘Baking’ and ‘Cupcakes’. Not only does this indicate what the post is about, it also means if a reader clicks on one of the tags, all your blog posts with that tag will be displayed. Try it out – there are tags at the bottom of this post!

To add tags to your post, simply type the tag into the ‘Tags’ box and click the ‘Add’ button.

5. When your post is finished, click on the ‘Publish’ button, which will make your post live.

Task

For every ‘thing’ there will be a corresponding task to complete. For Thing 1, the task is to register your own blog and publish your first post.

The purpose of your blog will be to record your progress during 23 things. For every ‘thing’ you complete, we’d like you to publish a blog post reflecting on that ‘thing’ – this will be a great way to share progress and tips with eachother. So that we can all find one anothers’ blogs, please let us know where you’re blogging by following the instructions below:

Register Your Participation on the Programme

To register your participation on the programme, please fill in the short registration form at: http://tinyurl.com/23thingsRHULsignup

It’s important that you do this, as we’ll assume anyone not on the list is not participating in 23 Things.
